QUINTA DA COMPORTA, PORTUGAL
STAY
Quinta da Comporta, Portugal
I first read an article about Comporta in an inflight magazine on a plane in 2016. I’d never heard of it, and it immediately caught my eye as somewhere I’d love to visit.
Located approximately one hour south of Lisbon (by car) on the west coast of Portugal, some say that Comporta is the most chic, stylish beach retreat in the country. Set in the district of Setúbal on the Tróia Peninsula, this area is characterised by its relaxed, low key lifestyle, rice fields, pine trees and its endless white sand beach.
Described as a wellness boutique resort, Quinta da Comporta opened in March 2019. It was designed by prominent Portuguese architect Miguel Câncio and I think it’s absolutely stunning. I love the simplicity of the design that references the spirit and history of Comporta - there are historical references to Portugese fisherman’s cabins, old warehouses and the thatched houses that are typical of the area. It has a relaxed ‘beach hut feel’ with the use of bleached wood, a mix of rustic and contemporary furnishings and a neutral colour palette.
It was designed to fit in to its surroundings with a focus on sustainability - it has solar panels for electricity, they used locally sourced materials where possible and bikes and electric buggies are the preferred mode of transport.
There are 73 rooms, suites and pool villas to choose from, and the facilities are excellent. There is a heated infinity pool overlooking the rice fields, a cinema lounge, a restaurant, bar, fitness centre, sauna, heated indoor pool and a Spa that offers treatments with ‘rice’ as the main element. There is also a shuttle that takes guests to the nearby white sand Carvalhal beach.
Comporta and its relaxed way of life is is definitely calling me - I can’t wait to visit and explore all that this wonderful part of the world has to offer!
