Il Borgo del Balsamico, Italy

When I’m travelling, I like to get a sense of where I am from the minute I open my eyes in the morning. If I’m waking up in Italy then I need to feel instantly that’s where I am - not in a super minimalist, modern space that could be anywhere in the world! I can imagine that waking up at Il Borgo del Balsamico would leave me in no doubt that I’m in the Italian countryside.

This beautiful, historical guesthouse sits on 10 hectares of land in the quiet countryside near the towns of Parma, Modena and Bologna - some would say the ‘gourmet area of Italy’ where you will find the most amazing food. Think of delicious goodies such as Parma ham, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and balsamic vinegar. This family property produces artisanal balsamic vinegar, and they have also opened their home to create a guesthouse of 7 rooms and 1 apartment.

The property is made up of a villa that was originally built in the 1700’s and an 18th century farmhouse. Each guest room here is unique in style, and beautifully furnished with a mix of antiques, art and modern furniture and fittings - just the way I like it! All of the reviews I’ve read about this guesthouse say it feels like you’re staying in an Italian family home - I think there’s nothing nicer than feeling like you’re immersed in local life, even for a short time.

There is a lovely outdoor swimming pool for guests to use in the warmer months as well as a stunning 19th century garden where you may even be lucky enough to see deer wandering amongst the trees.

Breakfast is served every morning and consists of delicious homemade bread, jams, cakes and fantastic local produce. During your stay you must take the opportunity to learn more about the balsamic vinegar production, taste the products and see the ancient storage facilities onsite.

If you’re after a genuine Italian experience in the peaceful countryside then this is the place for you - I can’t wait to visit!
